Parlez-vous Doggish? At long last, dogs will know just how smart their owners can be. By unlocking the secrets of the hidden language of dogs, psychologist Stanley Coren allows us into the doggy dialogue, or "Doggish", and makes effective communication a reality.

Drawing on substantial research in animal behavior, evolutionary biology, and years of personal experience, Coren demonstrates that the average house dog can understand language at about the level of a two-year-old human. While actual conversation of the sort Lassie seemed capable of in Hollywood mythmaking remains forever out of reach, Coren shows us that a great deal of real communication is possible beyond the giving and obeying of commands.

How to Speak Dog not only provides the sounds, words, actions, and movements with which we can effectively communicate with our dogs, but also deciphers the signs that our dogs give to us. With easy-to-follow tips on how humans can mimic the language dogs use to talk with one another, How to Speak Dog gives dog lovers the skills they need to improve their relationships with their pets.

There's a wire fence between my property and my neighbor's. Her dogs do not like anyone approaching the property. I was out in the back yard one day and they charged the fence barking and carrying on. I stayed where I was and faked a huge yawn. One dog stood looking at me in confusion, the other backed off. I loved this book for the whys of how our furry friends act, and for the practical advice. The yawn showed that I had no interest in being a threat and both dogs understood the signal.

How to Speak Dog Mastering the Art of DogHuman Communication (Audible Audio Edition) Stanley Coren PhD Rudy Sanda Tantor Audio Books Reviews

I have raised and trained dogs for a half-century. This is the best book I have found for the person who wants to get/has gotten a dog and wants to understand how 1.) they communicate 2.) how to communicate to them 3.) how their brain works compared to humans. If you want to understand your dog, this is a great book. It is NOT a training book. It is for learning what's going on between those furry ears. I recommend this book to anybody who is thinking of joining their life with a dog. Whenever someone tells me they are getting a dog I tell them to get this book and read it. A year later I can tell from their dog who did and who didn't. Besides, Coren is fun to read. He clearly "gets" dogs.
I bought this book when I was at my wits end with an 8 month old White German Shepherd puppy I "rescued". I had been around dogs all my life and thought I "knew" how to handle a dog and make him happy. On no I didn't! The day the book came, I sat down and read it cover to cover while my better half took our rambunctious Pup for 3 walks up and around the BIG hill at the Canyon dog park. By the time the boys came home, I felt as if somebody had handed me the Mayan Codex or the Rosetta Stone! I finally "got it".

Since dogs speak to us with their bodies as much as their utterances, Coren's helpful illustrations of the body language he is referring to in a given chapter are essential references for both new and experienced dog people. You'll soon be able to tell goofy playful from sneakily trying to dominate things. He also weaves some wonderfully loving and reassuring information throughout his examples of each type of dog communication. I especially loved something he said at the end about the sound of a dog breathing in the night - I don't want to wreck it for you by relating it in total.

Bottom line - Stanley Coren knows what dogs are saying and he can teach you to know it too. He doesn't have a hip show on NatGeo or any gimmicky maneuvers, lines of dog collars or sparkly leashes. He just has plenty of love for dogs and their people and a desire to bring them together in "conversation". I have giiven this book to many people who rescue dogs from a local Breed rescue and they all say the same thing - This book was like a gift from the heavens. Dogs are NOT people and they are NOT your children. However, they choose to be with us and unlike that GUY with the show on TV, this book explains it all without making you feel like the stupidest person on earth. You can and you will communicate well with your dog be they puppy or elderly if you simply keep a copy of this book on hand whenever you have a doubt.

Dogs DO have language. It just so happens most of their is expressed through things we can't smell or hear but we can see their body movements and that is the key. Get this book before you try any other and see if you too don't become a convert to Coren's gentle understandig of what makes dogs tick and how they express it to us, their people!
I am a fan of this book. Stanley Coren offers plenty of researched information and personal stories regarding our animal companions. I have learned quiet a bit on how to communicate with animals in general. Naturally not every dog is the same and therefore some of the information in terms of language do not apply exactly, or at the very least apply in a modified sense. It is amazing how us humans misinterpret what animals are saying and can very easily keep our furry friends just by learning and understanding what they are telling us. Despite what some may say all animals communicate (even insects) it just isn't through the use of words like humans. When we take the opportunity to understand tail, muzzle, ear, noise, and etc signals we can form a much better bond. And we can also avoid aggression. One specific bit of information I had not known before was what the "humping" signifies. Dogs are not gay. Rather a sign of showing dominance over another (even stuffed animal) is through "humping" or rather mounting.
For the price, I really like this book! As a speech and language pathologist (SLP) with a very "vocal" rescue dog that also communicates through non-verbal gestures, I was frustrated by not always being able to interpret what she was clearly trying to tell me--especially given the fact she had a bad past life before I adopted her. I was looking for not a "cutsey" book but something with more substance and evidence/facts. I like how this outlines different types of vocalizations and what it may mean, as well as provide visuals to illustrate some of the different behaviors. I think my dog is more vocal than most, so not all vocalizations she had that I wondered about were on there.

Unfortunately, the one I was really curious about was not on there--a sort of howl/whine that she does if we have interacted with a dog on the walk then see them again, not sure if she WANTS to see the dog again or is telling me she does not want to interact again. If I let the leash loose, she continues walking and does not try to turn toward them, so I'm thinking she may not want to interact again. However, I wish I knew for sure!

However, all in all I am very pleased. I would give it a 4.5 stars if I could, but since I cannot, I will give it 5 stars! Pleased overall. Nice book for any people who want to know more basic evidence/facts about dog behavior and communication.
